Former Chelsea and Manchester United manager José Mourinho is reportedly set to join Fenerbahce, marking his return to football management ahead of the Champions League final.
The 61-year-old Portuguese tactician, who has been out of work since his dismissal from AS Roma, has reached an agreement to become the new head coach of the Turkish giants.
According to Football transfer expert Fabrizio, Mourinho has agreed to a two-year deal with Fenerbahce, his first coaching role since being sacked by Roma in January.
“Fenerbahçe are closing in on the agreement to appoint José Mourinho as new head coach!” Romano wrote on his X account.
“Mourinho has already said YES. A verbal agreement is in place and the contract is now being reviewed by Mourinho’s camp. The announcement can take place today, as revealed by @abolapt.”
If confirmed, this would be Mourinho’s 11th managerial position in his illustrious career and his first in Turkey.
Mourinho’s potential appointment follows Fenerbahce’s failure to secure the league title this season. Despite an impressive tally of 99 points and losing only one league game, they were edged out by Galatasaray, who accumulated 102 points.
The Portuguese manager will be tasked with winning the Turkish Super Lig and will have the opportunity to work with a familiar player.
Fenerbahce’s squad includes Fred, whom Mourinho managed at Manchester United. Fred joined the Turkish club after leaving the Red Devils, having been signed by Mourinho from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52 million in the summer of 2018.
If Mourinho takes the helm at Fenerbahce, his mission will be to reclaim the league title and steer the team to new heights in both domestic and European competitions.
