Nigeria can drive business growth by reforming justice system – Expert

The slow pace of administering justice in Nigeria has been identified as one of the factors limiting the growth of businesses in Nigeria.

To turn around the situation, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), gathered experts to brainstorm and find solutions to the issues at the 2024 Law Week held in Abuja recently with the theme: ‘Doing Business in Nigeria: Economic Survival and Justice Delivery, where is the Meeting Point?

At the event experts holistically examined the challenging issues mitigating justice delivery, impact on business growth and how to surmount them.

Speaking as one of the discussants, Kingsley Obiukwu, group managing director of Bolton White Group, urged Nigerians to contribute their quota in fixing the justice system in Nigeria.

According to Obiukwu, every Nigerian has a role to play in ensuring the justice system is fast and transparent.

He said that fixing the justice system will impact positively on businesses.

“It is up to us to initiate this change especially when it comes to reforming our justice system. The pace of justice has been excruciatingly slow, and fairness has not always been upheld. Our courts must be trustworthy for businesses to prosper in the country.

“As a true Nigerian and a Nigerian doing business in Nigeria, I am fully aware of the tough economic realities we face. Corruption and hindrance to the justice system hold back our potential and limit business growth,” Obiukwu said.

While hoping the wheel of justice rolls justly, Obiukwu also expressed hope for the justice system in Nigeria.

“I am aware that the path ahead will be difficult but we cannot give up on the pursuit of fairness in justice. With a common goal in mind, Nigeria will surely have a better future. We have to keep working towards creating a better tomorrow,” he said.
